This is due to Altium’s signature unified design environment which allows everything from the schematic to the layout, as well as all the tools between, to work together in unison. The question is where is P-CAD now, and the answer might surprise you because it’s right here as part of Altium Designer.2.1 Creating a library of components for your order. You will find that it is easy to open and work with the different tools on your design thanks to the similar interfaces of the unified design environment. Orders are accepted in any format - GERBER RS274X, RS274D, CAM350, PCAD 2001-2006, ORCAD and others. After different sales and acquisitions over the years, P-CAD eventually became part of the Altium family.

The original goals of the creators of P-CAD actually align very nicely with the goals at Altium making this a perfect union of software. P-CAD was created to give PCB designers powerful software on a personal computer without having to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on mainframe computers and custom workstations. This aligns perfectly with Altium’s goal of putting Altium Designer, the most powerful and versatile software available into your hands so that you have the tools you need to design the challenging technologies of today and tomorrow. Place the schematic symbol in your project from that library and it should know what footprint to place in the layout, with the 3D model included.Design Tools That Are Built on a Solid FoundationJust as P-CAD was groundbreaking when it was introduced, Altium Designer has been groundbreaking since its introduction and continues to lead the field with its regular updates and enhancements. However, the 3D model downloads separately, so you’ll still have to open the footprint library and place the 3D model, embedding it in the footprint. The import is intelligent enough to link the footprint model to the schematic symbol in the library, so you don’t have to worry about that. SOLIDWORKS PCB will extract the file and create the schematic and PCB libraries.

Navigate inside SOLIDWORKS PCB to File -> Import and select the file type as P-CAD library. Might as well check to download the 3D STEP model, too. Navigate to the part you need to download in Ultra Librarian, and select to download the PCADV15 file under the Altium grouping. Just recently I learned how to do it, so here is the official answer: you can download any component from Ultra librarian into SW PCB 2017 and newer without the use of any script. I’ve gotten some questions about whether SOLIDWORKS PCB can import the files generated by Digikey’s Ultra Librarian tool.
